What do you do when one morning your less than 3-year-old laptop does not turn on anymore? That was the question we were asked all the time, and today we have got this Asus which decided to do exactly that. With no prior damage.
We knew it was electronic related and quoted the customer over the phone. Thankfully he understands the impact of the ever-increasing electronic waste on our planet and how we can tackle it by having our laptops repaired instead of buying new ones every 2 or so years.
Asus not turning on Repair Process
We dived straight into the problem, and knowing these laptops; we knew it wouldn’t be easy. The slimmer these laptops get, the less repairable and more fragile they end up being.
We started poking around and discovered that we have a blunt short on one of the main power lines. There was no indication of any organic materials damage to the laptop neither any physical damage.
So we isolated the CPU and RAM line and injected some voltage into the shorting power line. We knew something would give up, prepared with heavy artillery (an infrared microscope), we start increasing the current. Suddenly the problem popped up.
Under a microscope, it was clear that one of these capacitors popped and start shorting internally. As we all can see, they do not really pop visually.
Can you guess which of these four is the culprit for Asus not turning on issues??

So the damaged capacitor was the second one. These low-quality capacitors are awfully cheap and unreliable parts, which says a lot about the companies engineering these laptops these days.
