2011-2012 iMac’s are one of the most resilient iMac’s out there. We keep getting blown away by how well built they were back in the ages. Even after 10 years in service, this 2011 iMac survived and operated perfectly.
However, the owner was not aware of one crucial reason why these iMac’s fail in bulk – the dust, which accumulated within, causing this iMac to need a repair by getting stuck on a white screen while loading.
iMac stuck on a white screen – Taking it apart
Two issues, in general, can cause this. It would be either a failing hard drive on an iMac or a failing graphic card repair on an iMac. Both of the repairs have a very high success rate and ensure that you can get another 3-4 years life out of your iMac.
We always prefer to be a failing hard drive as it is easier to repair and pretty much the best repair/upgrade option you can have for your pre-2017 iMac. Check some of our related cases.
This was not the case, unfortunately with this iMac Repair stuck on white screen. The accumulated dust within caused the system to overheat to the breaking point. Resulting in a failed graphic card on this iMac stuck on a white screen.
We must admit, this is not an easy disassembly. Many connectors are running through this motherboard, and a little slip of a screwdriver or wrong pull of a cable may damage a sensor or chip.
We aimed to take the graphic card out to perform the so-called iMac Graphic Repair procedure in our Adelaide office.
iMac stuck on a white screen – Graphic Card Repair Process
We could clearly see how dry the thermal compound was on the radiator block. The thermal compound usually has a lifespan of 2-5 years, depending on the humidity and temperature of the environmemt. Unfortunately, this 10-year-old iMac passed way beyond that threshold and has never been serviced.
It was clearly visible that the compound has dried up so much that the heat from the graphic chip could not transfer correctly to the cooling block. Thus causing the system to crash when it tries to loa the operating system.
We have only one way to fix iMac Graphic Card problems (apart from replacing the whole part, of course). Unfortunately, this method involves resoldering the graphic chip back to its place under concentrated heat.
Please note: This is not educational material. It is rather a showcase of the services we offer.
Therefore, it should be used as general guidance of what to expect of such repairs.
In case you have a similar device and need the repair, always rely on professionals. These are sensitive electronic devices, and small mistakes may cause irreversible electronic damage. Which may require whole part replacement for 2 or 3 times the cost.
Successfull iMac stuck on a white screen Repair
Once we have performed the very much needed graphic repair, we left the iMac to run overnight heavy gaming tests. Again, we ensure that it passes all the required tests, and we can check it out as a reliable machine, which should serve another 3-4 or even more years with no troubles as it did for the last 10.

Repaired, not Replaced!
We are committed to reducing e-waste in Australia. How we do it is by educating our customers in the repairability and longevity of their devices, as well as providing affordable iMac Repairs here in Adelaide.
Although our best intentions and hard work, this is not an easy task. Customers must accept that cost of high-quality electronic repairs, is between a third and half of the price of a new device. However, with the current trend of planned obsolescence in electronic design, we see more and more iMacs having shorter lifespans. To tackle that, while we do our repairs we target common planned obsolescence engineering design mistakes to ensure we extend the life expectancy of the iMacs we repair. Check some of our iMac Repair Cases to get an idea of the process.
That said, if we buy a new one or write it off via insurance, it does not guarantee that the new one will not meet the same fate as the older one pretty soon.
As matter of fact, quite often we see accidents reoccurring within less than 2-year gaps. If we can save 3000$ or even 1000$ today by repairing our faulty iMac is great. That’s an extra half iMac cost ready to be spent on another one when the time comes or our need for performance increases.
When that time comes is up to us to buy a new one or keep pushing the one we have, but delaying it by a year or three is always a good starting point and saves another abandoned iMac polluting our one and only Planet.
