2018 Macbook Pro Repair A1989 – Not Turning on Repair

One of the very rare cases where the manufacturing fault caused a Macbook Pro Not to Turn on and stop functioning two years after the assembly.

This Macbook Pro died with no reason after it was used primarily on a desk in an office for business practices. “Yesterday morning it just didn’t turn on” – Customer reported

Hopefully, soon we will see local manufacturing of these machines in every country, and we won’t be relying on a low-quality workforce, rather than we would get quality builds. Like the old Macbooks used to be.

Even if that means that a price hike is inevitable – https://9to5mac.com/2019/09/23/2019-mac-pro-will-be-made-in-united-states-after-facing-trump-tariff-uncertainty-doubles-american-made-component-value-over-last-model/

The first thing we did was to check if it pulls any current. We do not have those lovely green/orange lights on the chargers anymore. So we can’t even see if anything is happening with the Macbook when it is not turning on. New generation Macbooks usually stays on a black screen with no signs of life.

It may be a bit hard to see on the top left corner of the picture. It requests 20V from the charger, but there is no current consumption. Which tells us that there is is no voltage even reaching voltage controllers so they can turn on and start distributing the power within the Macbook

We wanted to see what is causing this Macbook not turning on, so we took it apart. The first thing we noticed is that 2-year-old MacBook sitting mainly on a desk, had battery cells start expanding. What does this tell us about the quality of battery cells on new Macbooks?

Hard to see with an untrained eye, there was a little scratch around the screw assembly point. Looked a lot like a screwdriver has slid when the assembly worker was putting screws.

Under a microscope, it was clear that screwdriver must have hit the corner of the resistor (little vertical black component) and destroyed most of its bottom connection pad.

We needed to know the value of the damaged resistor. Only way we can know it is by relying on schematics. Thanks to leaked documents from the manufacturing process, we signed through the schematic and boatd files to trace a d identify the componwnt in quwstion.

We started measuring primary voltages around and noticed that one of the first line voltages were not present as an output from the voltage regulator. This voltage enables a MOSFET which then turns on PP5V_G3S voltage, which is the main voltage for the 5V power lines in the Macbook.

Therefore, it should be used as general guidance on what to expect of such repairs.
In case you have a similar device and need the repair, always rely on professionals. These are sensitive electronic devices, and small mistakes may cause irreversible electronic damage. Which may require whole part replacement for 2 or 3 times the cost.

The Result of the Macbook Repair

After a successful repair of its logic board, this Macbook is turning on now and working as expected. It is unbelievable how this little damage did not get caught at the assembly testing process, and stress on the board from typing was enough to interrupt the trace and cut the line.

Repaired, not Replaced!

We are committed to reducing e-waste in Australia. How we do it is by educating our customers on the reparability and longevity of their devices, as well as providing affordable Macbook Repairs here in Adelaide.
Although our best intentions and hard work, this is not an easy task. Customers must accept that cost of high-quality electronic repairs, is between a third and half of the price of a new device. However, with the current trend of planned obsolescence in electronic design, we see more and more Macbooks having shorter lifespans. To tackle that, while we do our repairs we target common planned obsolescence engineering design mistakes to ensure we extend the life expectancy of the Macbooks we repair. Check some of our Macbook Repair Cases to get an idea of the process.

That said, if we buy a new one or write it off via insurance, it does not guarantee that the new one will not meet the same fate as the older one pretty soon.
As matter of fact, quite often we see accidents reoccurring within less than 2-year gaps. If we can save 2000$ or even 1000$ today by repairing our faulty Macbook is brilliant. That’s an extra half Macbook cost ready to be spent on another one when the time comes or our need for performance increases.
When that time comes is up to us to buy a new one or keep pushing the one we have, but delaying it by a year or three is always a good starting point and saves another abandoned Macbook from polluting our one and only Planet.
