An interesting case of a Macbook Black Screen Repair we had in our post today in our Mac Repair workshop in Adelaide.
This gorgeous 13″ 2017 Macbook Air came from north SA. The customer found us on the web and called for an inquiry. We knew what to expect from the fault described and able to quote adequately.
We didn’t waste time and jump straight to it. First, we need to confirm the issue by turning it on. Great about these models is that clear Apple logo allows us to quickly diagnose missing backlight on Macbooks by shining a torch through it.
Upon opening, it was clear there was slight liquid damage on the LCD screen connector causing it to short the power lines of the screen. They carry 50V boosted voltage, causing significant damage when shorted.
Macbook Air Backlight Repair Process
First, we wanted to check the LCD connector for damage. As the short seems to be originated around high voltage lines of the screen.
Replacement of these screens tops 600$ new, and if there is a damage on the connector, it may increase drastically repair quote we gave to the customer.
If we look closely to the left corner of the screen LCD connector we can see how it is slightly bruised up, due to the short within the connector.
When measured, the LCD connector had no short on it – what a relief. We have also noticed the backlight fuse also was shorted. So we went and replaced it.
When removed, we could still measure a short on the LCD connector side, meaning something is shorting within the LCD connector.

In case you have a similar device and need the repair, always rely on professionals. These are sensitive electronic devices, and small mistakes may cause you a fortune.
Once the connector replaced, we were ready to assemble and test. As there were no other liquid signs on the board itself, we concentrated our repair around the LCD connector area and burned backlight fuse.

Repair before Replacement
We are committed to reducing e-waste in Australia. And the way how we do it is by educating our customers and providing affordable Macbook Repairs.
Although our best intentions and hard work, this is not an easy task. Customers must accept that cost of high-quality electronic repairs, is a third to half of the price of a new device. While we do the repair we target common planned obsolescence design mistakes to ensure the longevity of the laptop usability.
That said, if we buy a new one or write it off via insurance, it does not guarantee that the new one will not meet the same fate as the older one pretty soon.
Quite often, we see accidents reoccurring within less than 6 months gaps. If we can save 1000$ or even 600$ today by repairing our faulty Macbook is great. That’s an extra half laptop cost ready to be spent on another one when the time comes.
When that time comes is up to us to buy a new one or keep pushing the one we have, but delaying it by a year or three is always a good starting point and saves another Macbook polluting our planet.
