This time we had a type of repair which is very common on these 2008-2012 model iMacs – iMac starts up with a black screen repair.
It is a case where iMac turns on and we can hear it producing the chime loading sound, but there is no picture on the screen. We can quickly confirm this by pressing the Caps Lock button on the keyboard and getting a response from its green light.

Firstly we need to take apart the iMac and take out the failed graphic card. We can do this repair in two ways – We can either replace the graphic card (that’s most of the repair shops used to do, including Apple) or attempt to repair it. Replacing it will be ideal, however considering these cards, we will have difficulty finding new ones on the market. While used ones will be pretty much at a state close to failing like this one.
We can see immediately the thermal compound is completely dry. It should look like fresh toothpaste. However, it is completely dry like cement. It requires diluting and scraping off without damaging the chip.
Once the area is clean, this little board goes into the GPU repair machine, which resolders the chip back. By resoldering it back under intensive directed heat we ensure the solder joints are connected properly.
