Lenovo X1 Carbon Repair – Diagnostic of the fault
This type of behaviour with laptops usually means there is a short inside within the electronics. Repairable or not we would know only when we start the repair process.
We have informed the customer, who was waiting while we were assessing the fault. Once he agreed to go ahead with the repair and was happy with the quote we could continue troubleshooting/repairing the Lenovo.
Even on the external screen, there is no video output. Seems the power sequence cannot complete causing mid start power cutoff.
Looking at the board, everything is soldered straight on. This is standard for the current generation laptops, however is not great for the customer. Having fewer daughter or connection boards means that all components are soldered on the mainboard. It means that if the mainboard is unrepairable or damage is beyond repair, the replacement cost is 80-90% of the cost of the laptop itself.

Knowing that we are dealing with a possible short circuit, we start measuring through the components. Following primary and secondary power lines, we can detect if there is a short somewhere.
With a detected short location, we easily can replace the faulty MOSFET. Luckily it is a generic MOSFET with an available datasheet, so we know exactly where to find it.
After replacing the MOSFET, we could turn on the motherboard and test the remaining of the system.
Please note: This is not educational material. It is rather a showcase of the services we offer.
Therefore, it should be used as general guidance on what to expect of such repairs.
In case you have a similar device and need the repair, always rely on professionals. These are sensitive electronic devices, and small mistakes may cause irreversible electronic damage. Which may require whole part replacement for 2 or 3 times the cost.
Lenovo X1 Carbon Repair – More to repair
We all like it when jobs are straightforward, this allows us to keep the cost stable. But like we mentioned above and keep seeing often, the engineering design of the new laptops is not as best of the older ones. X1 Carbon used to be one of the most resilient Lenovo’s out there… well not anymore.
When we turned on the laptop to continue testing we have also detected that the operating system can’t be located. We thought initially it could be a corrupted Windows from the sudden shut down, but after running a couple of tests over the SSD and considering the brand of the SSD installed on this more than 2000$ worth of laptop.
For such an expensive and quality laptop we did not want to risk jeopardising customers’ data on the SSD . Hence we offered to replace the SSD with a high quality Samsung drive, instead of leaving the shabby and unstable Union memory. This was we could rest in peace that the customer’s data is safe.
We run couple of cycles of Lenovo Diagnostic software to ensure there are no other issues with the system. This ensures once more we are signing off a quality repair.
Successfull Lenovo X1 Carbon Repair
Finally, we have a stable system where we can install fresh Windows. The beauty of Windows 10 is that the license goes with the Laptop and if we need to reinstall the software we do not need to worry about licensing or purchasing new Windows.

Repaired, not Replaced!
We are committed to reducing e-waste in Australia. How we do it is by educating our customers on the repairability and longevity of their devices, as well as providing affordable Laptop Repairs here in Adelaide.
Although our best intentions and hard work, this is not an easy task. Customers must accept that cost of high-quality electronic repairs, is between a third and half of the price of a new device. However, with the current trend of planned obsolescence in electronic design, we see more and more Laptops having shorter lifespans. To tackle that, while we do our repairs we target common planned obsolescence engineering design mistakes to ensure we extend the life expectancy of the Laptops we repair. Check some of our Laptop Repair Cases to get an idea of the process.
That said, if we buy a new one or write it off via insurance, it does not guarantee that the new one will not meet the same fate as the older one pretty soon.
As matter of fact, quite often we see accidents reoccurring within less than 2-year gaps. If we can save 1000$ or even 500$ today by repairing our faulty Laptop is great. That’s an extra half Laptop cost ready to be spent on another one when the time comes or our need for performance increases.
When that time comes is up to us to buy a new one or keep pushing the one we have, but delaying it by a year or three is always a good starting point and saves another abandoned Laptop from polluting our one and only Planet.
