This time we had 2014 model iMac which was working very slow, with constant spinning wheels and responsiveness issues.

When the customer arrived, we ran some basic diagnostics and noticed that the hard drive benchmark was extremely slow. Thus causing the iMac to run slow and showing spinning wheels often.
Slow iMac spinning wheel repair process
We diagnosed this slow iMac spinning wheel repair issue to a failing hard drive. And to replace it we need to slice open the iMac apart.
Due to the design of these iMacs, as explained in my previous articles, we need to slice open the iMac and take off the front screen. These retina screens, are glued with very strong double side tape, and if not taken out correctly, one can damage or crack the screen very easily.
These screens are very expensive, 27″ iMac Retina screens are in the excess of 2000$. So make sure you are using professional services in repairing your iMac.
Annoyingly, the hard drive on these models is within the compartment, behind the glued in the screen so removal of the screen is necessary.
From the photo, we can see the amount of dust accumulated on the fan of the iMac. This is the main reason for hard drive failure on iMacs.
As the major cost of this process is the labour of taking the screen off, we offer to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD. This way we can extend the performance of this slow iMac to match the performance of 2020 model iMacs which come with an SSD from the factory.
As dust collects inside and piles over the fan, the internals of the iMac start overheating causing hard drive failure, if slow iMac spinning wheel repair is not performed on a timely manner, the customer may lose all of the data residing on the storage.
