One very challenging repair we had this week was this 2018 model A1706 Macbook Pro. It is the new generation USB-C type Macbook pro which is not turning on and needed a repair.
Water damage was the reason why this lovely Macbook had a sudden death. Literally within a couple of hours after water spilled on the keyboard, Macbook was completely unresponsive.
The issue we had with this model was that it was completely unresponsive after spilled water. We could see that the USB-C chips were responding, causing the charging ports to loop and not engage with the charger.
We took the bottom cover off and could see the traces of the liquid around the left USB-C controller, for this model to engage with the charger and allow charger voltage to reach 20V, all of the 4 thunderbolts USB-C controllers need to communicate with each other.
In this case, one of them was faulty and was not engaging with the charger. Thankfully we were the first place customer brought it for repair to see the liquid traces around one of the controller chips. Otherwise, it would have been difficult to identify which one of 4 is faulty.
Repair Process
We have spotted a green spot of oxidation straight away once we removed the cover. After careful cleaning, the area revealed its secrets.
There were damaged traces and completely corroded capacitors and IC chips that fall off the board, nowhere to be found.
There was so much loss of traces in the area that there was no place to solder the new components. All pads were completely missing. We knew that we are on to something challenging to repair here.
Although it was difficult we’ve managed to retrace every trace using 0.1mm copper wire. Just for a reference human hair is 0.05 – 0.1mm in thickness.
It was a difficult job, we admit. But it was a challenge we were up for, as we knew that the new logic board for this Macbook is in the range of 1000$.
Let’s not forget that the only way data can be accessed on these Macbooks is if the Macbook is fully operational. Unfortunately, Apple decided to solder the SSD drive straight on the Macbook in 2018, making even the simple task of data extraction from dead Macbooks impossible. Thank you, Apple, for ruining such a great product!

Although it looked messy when we have completed the soldering process, we were able to turn the Macbook on. This was a cheering moment for us.
This customer was turned away by Apple Genius Bar, and other shops for a repair deemed impossible. The last step was to cover the resoldered area with a UV solder resist mask (the green blob) to protect it from oxidation and external factors.

Repaired, not Replaced!
We are committed to reducing e-waste in Australia. How we do it is by educating our customers on the reparability and longevity of their devices, as well as providing affordable Macbook Repairs here in Adelaide.
Although our best intentions and hard work, this is not an easy task. Customers must accept that cost of high-quality electronic repairs, is between a third and half of the price of a new device. However, with the current trend of planned obsolescence in electronic design, we see more and more Macbooks having shorter lifespans. To tackle that, while we do our repairs we target common planned obsolescence engineering design mistakes to ensure we extend the life expectancy of the Macbooks we repair. Check some of our Macbook Repair Cases to get an idea of the process.
That said, if we buy a new one or write it off via insurance, it does not guarantee that the new one will not meet the same fate as the older one pretty soon.
As matter of fact, quite often we see accidents reoccurring within less than 2-year gaps. If we can save 2000$ or even 1000$ today by repairing our faulty Macbook is brilliant. That’s an extra half Macbook cost ready to be spent on another one when the time comes or our need for performance increases.
When that time comes is up to us to buy a new one or keep pushing the one we have, but delaying it by a year or three is always a good starting point and saves another abandoned Macbook from polluting our one and only Planet.
